CP on COP 28 & Beyond

The Idea in a Snapshot

A diverse and inclusive group of youths have become knowledgeable about the devastating effects of climate change and its interlinkages with biodiversity loss, air pollution and unsustainable food systems.

The overall concept behind the establishment of this Community of Practitioners is to enable and support a small cohort of youths to co-create and co-deliver content by themselves in such a way that they will be in a position to offer their know-how also to other peers in an extremely important area like climate action.

Rationale

Nepal is one of the nations at most risk of the unprecedented changes stemming from climate change.

At the policy level, the Second Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) prepared by the Nepali Government in 2020, is very ambitious blueprint for a more sustainable future able to rid itself of carbon fossils.

Likewise, the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) launched in October 2021 projects that USD 47.4 billion will be required to meet the country’s needs in terms of implementing the required adaptation actions.

Yet only a very strong will in the political leadership of the nation, combined with higher citizens’ participation and involvement in having a say and voice in the transition to a greener and more sustainable economy, can bring in the transformational changes envisioned in the NDC.

That’s why it is urgent to engage the citizens into a national conversation about what needs to be done for Nepal to be able to shift its paradigms of economic development.

Building expertise among local youths is a promising way to tackle the challenges posed by climate change and biodiversity loss and, at the same time, enable bottom-up transformations.

But youths must be equipped in terms of knowledge and know-how.

That’s why establishing a Community of Practitioners can be a practical and a transformative way of enabling a learning environment capable of providing youths with the right tools and skills for action to tackle climate warming and biodiversity loss.

Aims of the Initiative

  • Generate knowledge and know-how on climate and biodiversity-related global negotiations and implementation mechanisms.
  • Provide youth with the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of the key issues being discussed in the global forum with a focus on global and national levels (Nepal)
  • Educate and train participants on climate change, its positions, policies and the role of youth towards mitigating climate change.
  • Offer a select cohort of students the opportunity to develop practical tools to design and co-deliver training content for peers.

Key Outputs

– Review and analyze the major issues being discussed and negotiated at COP 28.

– At least 2 op-ed pieces written by the participants that will be published in local press.

-Capacity Building course Planet Pulse (Phase 2) initiative led by the members of the Community of Practitioners
