The Agenda 2030: Localizing the SDGs

On Localizing the SDGs

The SDGs should become a tool to better plan and better design new, innovative practices. This is particularly true if we think of the Agenda 2030 as an opportunity to empower localized decision making, a process in which youths can play an important role.

The Good Leadership Academy, through its offerings, enables and equips youths to plan, monitor and assess the implementation of SDGs locally.

A particular focus is given to reporting mechanisms like Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) and Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs)

The Good Leadership believes that there is a huge opportunity to do a much better job at engaging and involving youths in both VNRs and VLRs especially if they also are turned into planning and decision-making tools.

As they are now, both VNRs and VLRs are just reporting tools that lack real and meaningful bottom-up participation of the people.

The Good Leadership through the Academy would like to build the expertise and know-how for young people to lead the changes to make VNRs and VLRs stronger and more meaningful mechanisms.

Through this area, The Good Leadership Academy will help participants answer the following questions:

  • What are the Voluntary National Reviews and how do they work?
  • What are the Voluntary Local Reviews and how do they work?
  • What does localization of the SDGs mean in practice from the perspective of a young citizen?
  • How can we assess the SDGs locally?
  • How can we use the SDGs as a tool to rethink the ways decisions are made?
